Kids Cannot get computer to see disk in cdrom

I have an Elite PC with the following;
Windows ME
MSI 6378 motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2000 (1.67 GHz)
512MB SDRAM
40GB Hardrive

Had NTLDR failure, fixed this...however...I had to use an old 8X cdrom because after the NTLDR failure the computer would not see the 52X that came with the computer.

I have put a 40X, 50X and the 52X cdrom in the computer and it will see it, but won't read the disk. When I put in the 8X, it reads the disk just fine.

It is seen on the bios as a secondary slave. I do not have the disk or the manuals for this computer.

I had the NTLDR failure when trying to load Windows XP Pro.

Please help...I have been working on this for over a week and it is driving me crazy
!

have you tried reinstalling your XP pro in that case? or are you upgrading from ME to XP?

Out of curiousity, what is the secondary master and for that matter the primary slave?

From your specs all I see is 2 EIDE devices - The HDD and the CD.

Are you sure you have the drive jumpered properly? I'd put it as master on secondary.

CD Rom won't see disk

I have tried that. Didn't work. Any other suggestion?

I have tried the jumpers in all positions, I have changed the cables, I have tried several other CDroms, I have done everything I can think of. Like I said, the only cdrom I can get to work in the computer is a 8X. It sees it and reads the disk. I don't understand why it would work with the 8X but won't work with a 40X, 50X or the 52X.

Thanks for your suggestion!!!!

CD Rom won't see disk

Sorry...did not answer original question. There are only the two devices.

Thanks!

Dax_Brandy Hello Mustanglady and welcome to techimo!

I have done fdisk and reformatted the hard drive twice. All with no success.

Thanks for your welcome and suggestion.

Look at the CD-ROM for the jumper positions. It should be on primary slave or secondary master. If you plug it into the same cable that your hd is on then set it to primary slave. If you plug it into the other ide branch use secondary master position as Bill said.

Are you going into the bios to make sure the device is detected?
Sometimes the bios doesn't detect and you must force it to.
