I would not update (or try to) the cdrom firmware untill the system is working correctly. This could make the situation worse.
Make sure the cable is plugged in firmly on both ends. The CD should be master on the IDE secondary port (on some computers you may need to use CS (cable select)).
Could it be a bad cable? Swap the cable with the primary IDE (be sure to swapp both ends) hard drive.
What was the original problem and how did you fix it (NTLDR)?
