wont recognize memory

i have an asus p3v133 mb have two 512 pc 133 sticks in it. it only reports 512. it shows only 512 on boot up, "my computer" and sandra shows the same...
i remove one it will see the remaining stick, so i know both are functioning, but not together.. all the documentation on the mb says that it will take up to 1.5gb of mem.. any ideas??
thanks
frank

After reading the pdf on this board I can only think of 2 possible answers:

1. The manual is misprinted as far as the maximum memory or,

2. The maximum memory of 1.5 GB can only be achieved when using the VC NEC memory modules

Sorry,
