Truckies tips from WD HDD Experiences:
~I assume you know how to open your case and remove the drive~
1. Check all cable attachments to make sure their properly seated.
2. Check jumper settings to be sure you have it set properly (slave/master/cable select)
3. Try plugging in a different 4 post power cord to your drive (switch wioth cd-rom or something)
4. Reboot and enter CMOS settings
5. Check to be sure the drive is detected properly (size/ect...)
6. Reset drive infor in CMOS (usually by hitting F3)(auto detect)
7. Find S.M.A.R.T. settings and deactivate to test drive
8. Continue to OS
9. Check to see if drive is acting properly...(if using xp) follow next steps:
~Go to my computer and enter
~Go to drive and right click it
~Select the HDD in the Hardware menu and click properties on next window
~Go to volumes and click populate
(if this brings up drive information, then it should be acting properly)
If the problem persists try clearing CMOS and auto detect drives. Also reactivate your S.M.A.R.T. setting to ensure proper operations.
This little test works good for me in detecting junk drives when i test pulled equipment.
Good Luck to you,
Truckie
