Ok heres a stupid question about Linux

Does Linux have a registry? If not, then whats it's counterpart?Or is it written as such that it's not needed?I know stupid.I did a search on here for an answer, but found nothing.

No there is no registry.

There is no logical need for a regisrty. Windows didnt used to have a registry, and games like Quake II run without any registry entries. The registry just makes things a mess. So no, linux does not have a registry

To a certain extent the collection of plain text files in the /etc directory perform a similar job to the Windows registry, ie a central location for applications to dump various bits of configuration information. I think some projects to replace this with a central database or some such exist (or atleast were talked about) but I have never used them and prefer the idea of sticking to easily passable text files.

Regards

SuSE's linker cache is about the closest thing in Linux to a win registry that I can think of.I'm not sure if you can edit it.Probably can because it's Linux.
I know every time you makeany kind of changes in SuSE(install/uninstall progs, make system changes thru YaST2,etc)it would update the linker cache.

Actually, GNOME does have a registry-like database system, GConf, which applications that depend on the GNOME desktop can choose to use. The data is stored in XML files in ~/.gconf and can be edited with GConf-Editor. The system administrator can choose to lock certain settings using what are called schemas (I think).

Maybe KDE has something similar?

But yeah, most settings are stored in /etc and in .files in $HOME.
