No, I haven't heard of it before. I just shut down my 8kha+ box and checked my caps. So far so good. I did a Google on "8kha+ leaking capacitors" and only got a few hits.

I forget the specific story behind of it, but there was a huge batch of capactiors back in late 2001, early 2002, where the formula wasnt mixed quite right and it causes them to swell, and eventually break open. Not positive if thats the exact story, been awhile since ive heard about it.

The electrolyte, which is a locally produced knock-off of the Japanese P-50 type water-based system, was produced without the proper additives required to stave off excess hydrogen gassing. Consequently, aluminum capacitors produced with the P-50 knock-off tend to fail catastrophically, by blowing open the rubber seal and leaking liquid electrolyte on the printed circuit board. These failures reportedly occur at half the rated lifetime of the components.

the story was something like someone stole the formula but only stole part of it?? or something like that, lol. Reminds me of animal house when Belushi and D Day stole the wrong test answers.
Evidently Abit had lots of problems with this a couple years back.

Also like when Richord Pryor was using the super computer (lol) to find the formula for kryptonite in that superman movie. It has like .003 unknown..hehe..so he put something like tar or nicotine in it for the unknown part.

Had that on my Epox, as well as a few Abits. I replaced the bulged ones with good Panasonic low ESR caps and it's running as good as new. Any good electronics tech ought to be able to do it fairly cheaply.
The trick is having a vacuum operated desolderer, since the holes where the caps are are soldered thru six layers of circuit board and you have to get those holes real clean before you put the new caps in.

We used to have the fat "Pace" soldering/desoldering station in my AirForce days. I never used it a lot, probably due to laziness..but it was pretty sweet.
I have a board that had a couple caps replaced..it was a customers board..wouldnt boot..had 2 bulged caps...we replaced the motherboard but I had a tv tech replace the caps and it booted right up, but I havent messed with it anymore...I dont know what it will do with a full load on it etc.
Since the electrolytic caps filter the power supply voltages...sometimes a weak cap works ok with a slower cpu but wont work when the cpu is faster and drawing more current. I am sure this is true for video cards as well. The more current coming from the supply..the harder the caps have to work.
We had a guys comp that wouldnt work with his P3-900 or whatever on it..but it was ok with a slow celeron...I wasnt working on it...but I was over hearing the conversation. I was one of the only guys with electronic experience. Anyway, I took one look at the board and straight away saw it had like 8 blown caps, lol.
