Cant get sound working in win98FE

I've tried using my game theater XP but when I install the drivers it messes up the system and I end up having to reinstall windows. I've tried using the onboard sound on my Epox 8KHA+ but it just wont come on. does win98FE just not work with these options? (I've had it working before, no errors during install or any thing. (would use SE but that disk odly enough gives errors during file copy process...) should I just stick 2k back on? (going to evetually I just wanted to get a linux distro going first.)

have you installed the driver for the onboard sound? AFAIK 98 does not have all the drivers for the new boards today... your mobo should come with an installation CD and the audio sound driver is included there. or you can download from internet. just make sure you have the right model of the onboard sound of the mobo.

goodluck

Yep. I installed the drivers off the CD and I have the icon for that specific software in my sysyem tray. BUT the windows yellow speaker icon isnt there.... I'm lost here... it will beep at post when hooked up to external speakers so the sound chip works, the software for windows just wont kickin....

Thats what I'm thinking, (I think win98 SE will work) But i think win98 FE just wont work... I had a hell of a time getting Mozilla to work. (had to download updates form windowsupdate site..) but naturaly my win98SE is messed up (CD scrached) only reason I'm even using 98 is because of some odd ball games I have. (that and some of the games my sister has only work in 98 stabily) I'll re-install2k this weekend (or my next day off which ever comes first)

yeah maybe the onboard sound driver does not work with 98FE anymore..imo.. trying other OS may be advisable.

If the sound icon isn't showing you may have to turn on the sound within win 98. Check the sound and multimedia.
