Systems explorer.exe problems

Every so oftern my computer virtually stops. Task manager tells me that 99% of the CPU is working on explorer.exe. I know sod all about hackers and what they do, but is it likely that someone is using me for denial of service attacks? Other symptoms include windows opening wildly on whichever site I'm on and it happens randomly with no provacation.
The other alternative is that I've done something silly with my set up but I can't think what. Someone please help..............

I have been to Norton's site and they recon I have no Trojans or viruses. I do use a firewall and norton anti-virus but the first time this happened all of these had been disabled. What can I do to sort this mess out?

NDC had a very interesting observation about this problem HERE. Take a look and see what ver. your c:\windows\explorer.exe is. If it's 6.00.2800.1106, there is an update for it:

Sorry to sound like an idiot but how do you check the version. Been searching everywhere.

Double click my computer.

Double click your C drive.

Double click your Windows folder.

Scroll down to Explorer.exe and right click it.

Choose Properties from the menu.

Choose the version Tab.
