dumb question

is there a diffrence between normal 10/100 network wires and the gigabit wiring. If I have the gigabit wiring will it work with the 10/100 computers and get the 1000mb to the computers with gigabit wiring on the same line(all the hardware is rated at 10/100/1000mb).

basicaly I was wondering if the 10/100mb wiring will work with the gigabit data and if I upgraded the wiring will it work with the older 10/100mb computers as well as the gigabit computers if needed

Actually, I am in a Network Cabling class right now.. lol. Cat 5e will be able to handle gigabit ethernet. Cat 6 was designed for when ethernet went to 1000mb, but they found that they could push Cat5(e) to gigabit speeds without problems.

A quote from this article

" According to research conducted by the Gigabit Ethernet Alliance (GEA), over 85% of enterprises use a Category 5 UTP copper infrastructure for desktop connectivity to the wiring closet. In addition, tests have shown that over 90% of the installed Category 5 wiring is fully compatible with Gigabit Ethernet. In particular, any Category 5 link currently carrying 100 Base-TX traffic at low error rates is also capable of carrying 1000 Base-T traffic. "
