Any good programs that will do this? I got an online guide that i thought would teach me everything i need to know/have to make these but i cant figure a few things out. I dl'ed exact audio copy. I went to dl lame to use as the encoder but i only could get source code and i couldnt figure out wtf. Is there any good program out there that does this easier?

http://www.dbpoweramp.com

This is a good one. As I recall it supports ripping up to 320 kbps which is cd quality.

You can get a Lame executable. EAC and Lame are great.

There are a few places to go.

www.hydrogenaudio.org is the best audiophile forum about. Some things seem a little complicated but look for the reccommended settings and lame compiles threads.

Also some a good walk through here

at the end of the day if you are looking to get the best quality sound files then you should probably be looking at other file formats. MP3 is a lossy format which means that no matter how good it is it is not an exact copy of the origional. It's not even the best lossy format out there but is the most cross compatible with hardware devices.

For true great sound files you need to us a lossless format like FLAC or APE (Monkeys Audio). Look around the sites above and you will find out about them.

Since you're doing them yourself, check out ogg vorbis.
http://www.vorbis.com/

Many will argue it sounds better than mp3.

My opinion:

Ripping with Exact Audio Copy (Secure Mode) and encoding with LAME 3.90.3 APS is the best method to create high quality MP3's. Agreed, choosing a lossless format (FLAC, MA) would be a better route if you'd like to archive your music. It would sure make it easier to just transcode from a lossless format with programs such as dMC and Foobar2000 to the latest and greatest lossy format (AAC, MP3, OGG, etc.) Ripping your entire CD collection every 6 months can be such a hassle.

And in answer to your original question, a copy of the lame.exe file can be downloaded here (this is the latest version).
