Tech changed HSF now no boot

Hello there,

My friend changed the retail AMD heat sink to a Volcano 9 and applied artic silver thermal paste. He has a Epox 8k9ai, and his computer now just keeps beeping at him. He described it as beep beep beep beep that goes on forever.

I told him to clear his cmos and to make sure that no artic silver got on any other part of the chip except the core.

He hasn’t got back to me yet, but it just got me wondering what else I should check in case the above doesn’t work.

Anyway he’ll be around tomorrow so I can take a closer look as I’m having a small LAN at my place.

Thanks,

Also make sure you he didn't crack the core while putting on the heatsink or bend any pins...

We need him (or you) to count the beeps. They may be consecutive and just go on and on, but none of the POST beep code sequences indicate such as this.

We also need the BIOS chip manufacturer...the BIOS chip on that board is the newer smaller, square kind that fits down in a socket. There are different codes, depending on the type BIOS it is, i.e., Award, AMI or Phoenix.

The beeps may have one long and up to 8 short beeps if it is Award (Display test failure). There can be up to 11 short beeps on an Award BIOS board if the L2 cache memory is bad.

So, try to get the exact beeps and if they are all short or mixed.

It's possible you bumped a video card (especially agp) and came loose in the slot. Check everything really that they are all seated.

HSF wires are in the proper locations? Compare old with new.

I counted for 15 beeps and got bored. The BIOS is an award. Have also now tried it outside of the case with no ram, graphics card, sound and whatnot and still does same thing. Tried another PSU and re seated CPU and HSF.

Anything else? The CPU works in another motherboard so its not that.

Looks like the MB could just be dead

Oh well we still have another PC to play on for now.
