CPU speed for GA- 6xbc mobo

I am just putting together a pc with a Gigabyte GA-6XBC and an Slot 1 Celeron 266/66 processor. It has 128MB RAM and a 4.2GB HDD., cd-rom and burner.
I would like to run Windows XP Pro or at a minimum 98SE on this PC.
Can anyone help me with the best Clock speed to use and setting for this board and CPU.

Thanks
caigy

Just set the FSB to 66MHz in the BIOS to run it at 266MHz. Celeron's are multiplier locked so the adjusting the multiplier in the BIOS won't do anything.

Hmm... winXP on a celeron 266 and only 128MB??? I've never tried it, but that may be asking too much for such an old machine. You may just want to use win98.

Food

If you have a decent dual fan cooler, you can run that 266 Celeron as a 400 Celeron. (4 X 100). That was a "No Cache" chip and used to make the jump pretty good...

Why not just buy a cheap Slot 1 P3... like a P3-500 or so...you can get em for probably 40 shipped and have plenty of power to run Windows xp.

I have that same motherboard in a machine with a P3-450. I was using it to run Windows2k server for mcse studying.

Here is a manual for the board http://america.giga-byte.com/MotherB...ual_6bxc_e.pdf it shows the settings for the DIP switches for the different speeds etc.

John, Thanks. Yep as it is my first attempt at building a PC I didnt want ot go overboard in case things went wrong. But will certainly be upgrading once its all up and running.
Thanks for the link for the board.

I glanced through the manual and the board appears to support coppermine chips. You may be able to use a slotket adapter with up to a 1GHz celeron. However, I would do a little more research and verify this before plunking down the cash.

FWIW, i have a similar board, the Abit BX6 rev.2 running with an 850MHz celeron and slotket adapter.

well i seem to have progressed just a smidgeon. I pulled everything out and started with just a bare bones. MOBO, Graphics card, ram. Even got a new graphics card to test out.
Well Instead of a black screen I now have a pink screen but no writing.. Just lines.
Getting really frustrated here. Maybe its a shop job
