Fans (Blow or Suck?)
Just a quick question, I have a GeForce2 Ti, and the fan motor burnt out (which caused the system to act very strange, I assume due to some feeback or whatever from the card supplying power to a fan that just wasn't moving). Anyways, I removed the fan and the system ran fine, never really stressed the card with any gaming so there really weren't any heat issues. But recently I started to get into playing Enemy Territory, so now there is an issue. I tossed on a fan from an old PIII processor (which fit fine and is running off a three pin power supply via the motherboard). My question is, which setup is better, sucking air onto the chip (passing it out through the heatsink fins), or blowing air out away from the chip? Is one better than the other?

Thanks Strawbs, that's what I was tryig to find out. Cause I could hook the fan up either way, but if blowing onto the chip is standard, or better, that's the way I'll put it on.

you want a chipset fan blowing down on the heatsink only.
The reason for this, if you pull the air through the heatsink and out the fan, you will be pulling the heat trying to radiat OUT from the core back to the core. Blowing air down on the heatsink helps the heat "escape" to the outer edges of the radial fins where they have more exposure to open air for the heat to escape to.
As far as case fans go....all depends on the case, although the trend is to have the higher case fans blow out of the case, and the lower ( front ) case fan(s) blow into the case supplying cool air. I'm working on seeing what happens with different case fan configurations currently.
