ti4200, 4600 or 4800?

I have noticed that there are many versions of the nVidia Geforce 4 ti cards.

Geforce 4 ti 4200
Geforce 4 ti 4200 w/ AGP 8X
Geforce 4 ti 4600
Geforce 4 ti 4400
Geforce 4 ti 4800
Geforce 4 ti 4800 SE


Does anyone know where a good review of each card is? Does anyone know off-hand which card is best for what application? What is the main difference between each card?

I currently have a Geforce 3 ti500 64mb and I may need to upgrade soon. I mainly do 2D and 3D CAD modeling and photoshop editing (editing large files, 10-100 mb)

You don't game much, or at all?

If not, skip the GeForce cards and take a look at Matrox's Millenium line or Parhelia. If you really want some power and are willing to spend, the ATi FireGL cards are pretty dang sweet for CAD modeling.

If you do game, get the fastest one you can afford. Pretty simple there.

i believe the ti 4600 were the fastest, but like Whir mentioned these cards are mainly built for gaming. Look at these

I do some gaming,..mainly Warcraft III, Unreal Tournament, & Half Life...Will these other cards (matrox) not preform ok with gaming? I would like a card that is good in both areas.

Albatron Ti4200P Turbo Edition can easily be OC'd to 4600 levels and costs much less! That's the card of choice, IMO, in the Ti family...

Better go with a Radeon or GeForce in that case, Giger. The Matrox cards have 3D capabilities, but aren't really engineered for the massive throughput it takes to render the new FPS games. For instance, my Millenium G400 will play Mechwarrior 4 pretty well, but chokes on Warcraft III.

I'll stick with my old advice. Buy the fastest one you can afford.

This is an awesome card for the price I used to have one in my machine before I upgraded to a 9800 pro it would easily overclock to better than Ti4600 speeds.

The games you listed should perform excellently with any of the GeForce 4 line of cards.

You may also want to consider the low budget offerings from 3DLabs if you're into CAD.

I use a Matrox Parhelia, and in terms of gaming it does pretty well. Real-life situations seem to place it at or just under the Geforce Ti4200 in terms of performance to me. It lets me run Planetside pretty well and lets me play NHL 2004 with full details set on. And it's TV-Out and Multi-monitor support is second-to-none. In fact, it lets you connect 3 monitors to it or 2 monitors and a TV to it in a multitude of configurations (cloned, stretched desktop, separate desktops, etc).

That said, do you really need to upgrade? Only cause you said that you "may need to upgrade soon". Figure out how much money you're willing to spend on a new video card and what games/applications you wish to run and people here can help you better.

I have to agree with Martoch and Manford, the 4200"s rock, and are easy overclockers.
