Networking Problems - Can't Share Files

I have a problem in my network, I can't seem to share files to the other computer

Both computers are running WinXP Pro.

I can share my Internet connection or play games over the network though.

How would I go about fixing my problem?

Thanks in advance.

I think you have to put the files in the Shared Documents folder for it to be able to share across a network..

I've already done that, but the thing is, is that I cannot see the shared files. I can't even see my own shared folders on the "My Network Places" window.

When I try to access the workgroup it says I'm not the administrator or something. I have checked the "User Accounts" from the control panel and it says that I am the administrator.

no necessarily

you can access any folder you would like as long as you share it off

just right click on the folder you want to access. click sharing and security

click share this folder.

now from the computer you want to access it

go to start> run> then type \\the other computer name\shared folder name

it will ask you for a password. use the login name and password of the computer you are trying to log in too

or if you want to access the whole drive of the other computer

type

\\computer name\C$

and use the login and password info

also make sure you have both computers in the same workgroup

Just another thing... if you have a software firewall running (even the default windows XP firewall) make sure it will allow network traffic, too.

You can check workgroups by looking at the properties page, and computer name tab, after right clicking on My Computer on the desktop. They can be changed there too.

Let us know how you fare.

BTW - Welcome to TechIMO!!

Cheers
Mick

I'll try doing what you guys said. Thanks

Mickwish - I am from Australia as well.

Also I use Norton Personal Firewall? Would this have anything to do with it?

I've fixed this problem once but when I restarted my computer again, it was stuffed again. I forgot how I fixed it though.

Norton firewall may affect it. Is there a setting that lets all local network traffic through? Might need to input the "safe" range IP addresses and make a rule, if not.

The main thing is permissions, though. If you can't connect, make sure permissions are set properly in the share. Try checking this guide in how to share in XP Pro.

We have some other TechIMO members in Brissy, too!

Cheers
