Kids HDD will not format

Hey Its Truckie Again:

I am currently trying to format a HDD i recieved from a pull today. Its is a SAMSUNG SV4002H 40GB HDD. The trouble I am having is that the drive will not format in FAT32 or NTFS format. I have tried to format it about 5 times now and continue to collect error messages from the effort. I had also tried using it as a slave and format it that way through XP but it will not do such a task. It starts to format but then proceeds to lock up my computer. It shows up in my hardware monitor and it is said to be in running order.

Can anyone explain this problem a little to me. I really dont want to have to send it off for a RMA deal. Its a nice sized drive. I may be interested in offering a reward to the person whom can help me overcome this problem.

REWARD: 9.73GB HDD IDE 5400 rpm drive. (currently using until this mess is cleared up. Reward recipient will pay shipping but drive will be free. Thanks.

REQUIREMENTS FOR REWARD: Help me make this into a WORKING drive. If i have to RMA it then the reward is not given.

Thanks,

Truckie

PS: hope thats enough incentive to get this resolved

Western digitals data Lifeguard software might be able to format it. It say its for WD only but I think I've used it before for other drives

another thought have you tried fdisk first then formatting?

samsung doesn't have hdd tools or at least none I can find. I always use Maxtor's tools first I'd check to make sure your drive is detected properly in the bios double check your cable and jumpers then use the Maxtor drive tools {trying to get the linkage now}

http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/powermax.htm

powermax is not a back-up tool it says on the website
"The PowerMax utility is designed to perform diagnostic read/write verifications on Maxtor and Quantum hard drives. These tests will determine hard drive integrity."

it runs any test you'd need in order to verify that the drive is working properly. It doesn't work for mobo's with the NVIDIA chipset for whatever reason

Quote:
Note: PowerMax v4.06 will not detect Ultra ATA hard disks connected to motherboards with embedded NVIDIA chipsets (SATA drives are supported). A new version to address this issue is currently in development and is slated for release soon. Please check the PowerMax download page periodically for updates. All versions of PowerMax prior to 4.06 are no longer supported, it is recommended that you update to version 4.06 before testing your hard disk.
