Win98SE Explorer problem

I have about a 2 week old clean install of 98SE on a machine. It just started an unusual behavior. It loads just fine but if I click on any of the desktop icons i.e. My Computer, My Documents, Recycle bin etc. the cursor changes to the hourglass and nothing happens. I open the Task Manager and it shows Explorer not responding. iIcan click on End Task or shutdown but nothing happens. I have to physically shut the machine down and restart but the same thing happens all over again.

I can get to defrag and scandisk thru the Start, applications route and have run both several times but the problem remains.

Any ideas why Explorer is having a problem or a solution?

Thanks

I can only take a stab and tell you what I might do. Run System File Checker and see if it turns up some corrupted files. Replace as needed.

and/or run drwatson, the little built in utility...run dr watson and it puts an icon the system tray.... then make the problem repeat and then click on the icon to see if dr watson shows anything.

you could also use sfc to replace the "explorer.exe" file (or whatever it is named)..might work, who knows.

Also check your network settings. Sometimes explorer gets really slow when it is confused about Network Neighborhood.

Thanks for your responses. I resolved it by simply restoring the registry to an earlier date. I don't know what the problem was but this solved the problem and it has been working perfectly ever since.

Right now I'm a real advocate of the scanreg /restore feature. Solves many problems, especially those "once in a lifetime" problems that will never happen again (windows does that a lot). If it doesn't help, than it's not a hassle to get the current registry back.
