Why are Maxtors so inexpensive?

Why are Maxtors so inexpensive? Well, compared to Seagate, Western Digital, and other brands I find at Fry's. Are they cheaper in quality? I plan on getting a second hard drive soon, and their 160 GB looks promising (especially after MIR).

I have used a total of 4 maxtor drives from an old 850Mb drive to my current 120Gb drive (SATA) Still going strong with good performance.

"This week" they are great Hard Drives! Seriously, perhaps they simply "over ran" on a production or miscalculated sales and have a surplus = low prices.

I'm speculating, of course.

The computer I'm using now has a wonderful Maxtor 40GB FastDrive ATA133 ... never had a problem with it.

I think they're trying to unload the non-SATA drives.

Well, I'm glad to hear that the people who are using Maxtors are having no problems. I've only used Western Digital in all of my home built systems and Seagate and IBM from my store-bought non-name brand computers.

Nothing wrong with Maxtors. And yes, you can get some great deals on them. Hard drives are one thing you can usually get cheaper in a B&M store than you can get them online (that is if you don't sending in the MIR's)

Since SATA is on the way in, do you think that Ultra ATA hard drive prices are going to go down? If that's the case, I'll hold out until the 200+ GB hard drives reach prices under $100.
