Athlon 2500 XP Temperature/Overclocking issues ....

Hello folks !

I have just purchased an Athlon 2500 XP and I want to overclock it ... The problem is that the temperature is already way too high in my opinion :

Idle/Full Load - 59/64 Celsius !

I have a Volcano 9 fan, and I have applied thermal compound when I installed the fan. I also tried the AMD's fan that came with RETAIL processor, and the temperature is approximately the same with that fan too. I have tried reinstalling the fan a couple of times and I still cannot get lower temperatures ...

Now, on the official AMD site it says that Barton 2500 can support temperatures up to 85 Celsius ...

What to do ? I have an older ATX case, that is "relatively" small and a 300 WATT ENERMAX power supply (2 fans).

Another curious thing : in SiSoft Sandra under CPU temperature is written 33 Celsius and in BIOS 59 (idle). Gigabyte's utlity (easy tune) gives me the same temperature as in BIOS. Board is Gigabyte K7 Tritron (via 400).

Any ideas ?

Do you have any other case fans? You should have AT LEAST 1 besides your PSU fans. 2+ case fans is pretty much standard now tho. Intake in the bottom, front, and exhaust out the top, back

No, I don't. I only have one fan, the PSU one. It is an old case, bought originally for a p2 266 Mhz back in the day.

What thermal compound did you use?
I'm getting a 2500+ and I want to overclock also so I'm getting a slk-947u and a 92mm fan and I'm going to use AS Ceramique. This is after reading many reviews and looking at comparisons of thermal compounds and heatsinks.

Well, I would assume thats your problem then. Good heatsink doesnt do you any good when it just heats up the case and puts hot air back on itself. If there arent any spaces to put fans in the case, you'll have to either modify it, or better yet just buy a new case.

I used the one that comes with the Volcano 9. I also tried the one that is already placed on the AMD's retail fan. Both gave same results.

AS Ceramique - I will check that out.

I already had the Volcano 9 fan, that is why I did not bother to get a new one.

Ok, that is what I suspected. No there is not enough place to put other fans on the case ...

Which case do you suggest ?

By the way, when you put thermal compound on the processor, how thick should it be ?

Only as thick as a sheet of paper or 2, very very thin. It simply servers to fill the microscopic valleys between the heatsink and the core

Pretty much any ATX case should do... They range in price from around 25 dollars all the way to 250 dollars. The more expensive cases (75+ range) offer a ton of room for expansoin and have lots and lots of fans. Prolly overkill in your case.

If you want, just surf some websites for cases that look good to you and post the links for us to see and make sure it'll work for you.

Before you spend the time and money on a new case, take the side(s) off your existing case and see what that does to the temp reading. If it cools down considerably, then getting a new case with good airflow will help things. On the other hand, if running with the case open doesn't cool things down very much, then you need to look elsewhere for the problem.

Alright then, I will take off the side to see what happens.

As VHockey86 informed me about the thickness of the thermal compound on the core - that might be the problem, I have put more than suggested. Perhaps that is causing improper heat dissipation between the heatsink and the processor.

I will keep you informed.
