You'll have to excuse me, between class, 2 jobs, a torrid break-up, and 4 hours of sleep every night, I'm almost at a breaking point...
Our school (Georgia Southern) started an initiative to put internet in every student's dorm room as soon as possible. Well, while they take their sweet time and wire 2 dorms every summer (still 6 left to go, meaning 3 years from now it'll all be wired), I am stuck as the head student analyst for dorm internet. Wow, what a title...but the job is becoming increasingly taxing.
In one of the wireless residence halls, there are around 100 people trying to connect to one of three access points. Each access point is a Cisco 350 series. 64-bit WEP is on, and we do not broadcast the SSID, nor the WEP key.
The problem is, if I
Net Stumble the hall, I come up with 24 different peer to peer (adhoc) networks, which I believe are interfering with everyone's ability to connect to our antennas. I hate WinXP's wireless networking, because no matter how many times we tell it to connect to ONLY access points, it always reverts back to the peer to peer network after it can't find the access point.
Also, all of the adhoc networks have MAC addresses that start with 02:00, so there's no way of telling who is accidentally creating which networks. What can I do to resolve this?
I should also note that if I use my own Cisco card, no matter where I go within the reisidence hall, I have absolutely no problem connecting to the access points.
