Wireless router question (d-link)....

I am looking into buying a Netgear wireless router, actually I haven't bought anything yet so I am open to others opinions as well. But Netgear products have never let me down and they have some decent rebates right now.

So anyway my main question is this. I am running a wired network. Here is the link to the Netgear router I am thinking about getting: Netgear MR814 and the PCMCIA card: Netgear WG511

I already have a "wired" router/gatway for my DSL with another hub attached to it. I only want the wireless so that my laptop is truly portable around the house. Will I be able to buy this netgear router and just use it as another hub tacked on to my other wired network, or does it have to have it's own gateway IP address as well? And if so how would that work. I've attached a diagram of how my network is layed out, maybe someone could take a look at it and let me know if what I'm trying to do will work.

If your curious on why I'm not going to use the G standard, here is my theory. I really don't need the wireless "g" standard (unless someone can convince me otherwise), plus it's more than double the price. I am however buying a "g" PCMCIA card for my laptop that way in the future I can simply upgrade the router and be all ready for the g standard and I will have "g" capabilities if I go to another location that has a g wireless network. Since everything is backwards compatible I think this is my best option.

Thanks,

Gary

if you get the netgear wireless router, take the wired dlink router out. and replace it with the new netgear.

adding two routers like that could cause issues.

then you can sale the old d link

as for the how the netgear preforms, looking new egg review part. looks like a nice router. As for "G" if you are constantly transfering large files over the wireless then you might want to consider "G". if the wireless is for surfing the web and other things B is just fine

That is kind of what I thought, thanks for confirming that Groundzero.

I've just done some more searching on Techimo, and have found that Netgear wireless stuff isn't spoken to highly of. Alternately I have found some awesome reviews about D-Link wireless and the prices are the same if not cheaper! So I'm already revising my Wireless add-on to include some D-link products instead of the Netgear stuff previously mentioned. Thank goodness for Techimo

D-link DI-614+

and

DWL-G650

Any good statements about any of these products?

Thanks,

Gary

i heard the D-link DI-614+ is an awsome router. some people report that the distance on the wireless is alittle lacking, and other say it just fine

Thanks GroundZero, those reviews of it were great. I think I'm definately going to go D-Link based on some of the stuff I've read about it. My other D-Link Wired router will probably just have to go. It won't matter since the wireless routers have 4 ports in them to use as well.

thanks,

Gary

I actually have the Netgear MR814v2- it's a good little router given my limited experience with it (only have had it operational for a few days). The only major gripe I have with it so far is that the antenna is not detachable so you can't add one with a higher gain.

I started with a Linksys router for my DSL, hooked up to my computer and my son and wife's computer. This worked great, because we are all upstairs. Running cables to the lower floors of the house wasn't an option, so I purchased the LinkSys 2.4Ghz wireless network access point. I plugged this into my router, bought 2 Linksys wireless USB adapters for the downstairs computers, and the Linksys wireless card for the laptop. Configuration was a snap. After recently upgrading my computer to XP Pro, I then installed XP's network gateway, and that works smoothly too. We're all peer-to-peer, with the other computers running Windows 98SE and ME. I have ZoneAlarm in place, and everything is working A+
