Kids PS 7 Mask layer question?

Hi, I get different results on 2 computers. Both loaded with the same CD. I create a new document black background. Paste a picture in to it. Go to Layer, Add layer mask, reveal all. Then when I go (PC based) to use the Gradiant Tool set up as Normal, 100% and I use it, then it works but when I then go to use it again the first bit of grading is reversed and the part of the picture reappears (On the other PC this doesn't happen). So therefore I can't use it as I wish to aid the merging of 2 or more photos together, I end up using the Eraser tool. It seems that there must be some option selected that I can't find and it is driving me mad, If anyone knows the answer it would be a great help. I am on XP.
Regards Robin

Check out the gradient you're using. Is it white fading to black? Or is it transparent fading to black?

Try using transparent fading to black.

Thank you for the reply
I don't have transparent fading to black? My choices are Fore to background, foreground to transparent and White to Black are the first 3 options.
Is there a simple way for me to use the gradient tool to aid the mergeing of 2 photos? Maybe I am making this hard?
