I think this is what you're looking for:
http://syslinux.zytor.com/iso.php
It won't be dead easy, but if you've got some Linux experience it should be possible, as ISOLINUX boots an image and mounts an ISO volume for it. I have heard reports of this working.

knoppix uses iptables. You could just write different scripts and run wichever you want.

ipchains is the packet filtering code in the 2.2 series kernels. Its rather lacking in functionality IMO, not least of all the complete lack of stateful packet inspection and connection tracking. Iptables/netfilter is the packet filter provided by the 2.4 series Linux kernel and is much improved, although the syntax still sucks IMO.

Well, first of all I am not really into pre-rolled firewall solutions so I may have a rather jaded view. Given the choice I would stick an OpenBSD box in and write the PF (the OpenBSD packet filter) rules by hand, short of that I would probably do a minimal debian install and use netfilter/iptables.

Maybe checkout ipcop as some people here seem to say good things about it, I cant really comment on Smoothwal 2.0 beta as I haven't used it. To be honest most solutions will probably be good enough for a basic home LAN.

Regards

ed
