windowsXP homeedition, faults according CHKDSK

After defrag with WindowsXP I get the message 'cannot defrag all files'.

If I check windowsxp with CHKDSK /p it tells me that there are one or more faults find on the volume.
It seems to be 'open files'' .
After CHKDSK /R the faults are gone.

But the next time I receive the same fault again.
What can be the problem?

Is it hardware (C-drive) or is it software.

My C-drive is a 80Gb Maxtor, formatted en partitioned with Maxblast3 program of Maxtor.
Maxtor diagnose shows all tests passed.

Who recognize this problem and can help me out?

Thanks in advance, Con

have you tried running a 3rd part SMART analyzer to make sure it's not the HDD? I had a mysterious issue with my xp pro box that ended up being a hardware failure BUT the maxtor diag did NOT say the drive was bad until the day after I got my RMA'd drive

I think I used a program called active smart to see the smart info and just let it run in the tray

defrag

Hi, I had a similar problem, and it was on fat 32 not ntfs file system so this could have been part of the problem. But i found if i did a disc scan "which is done different in xp to 98" first it seemed to cure the problem.
Disc scan on xp right click on c drive go to properties and tools and click on disc scan, tick both options and restart. Takes about 1 hour so do this when you don't need the pc for a while.
One more thing this pc that i had a problem with use to be part of a network and at start up it was looking for its friends so in my case if i didn't wait 5 mins or so before i did a job like defrag this cause the problem too. Good luck
