Systems magnified screen

Hi all,

Hope you can help me with this.

I've had a few problems recently with my PC (custom build, 800mhz, 256mb, 20gb, nvidia 32mb pci graphics, windows ME).

The most recent is that the screen is hugely magnified, to the point where I can't actually use it at all. The only item I can really access is the 'start' button, which fills about an eighth of the screen. The task bar is enormous. The only icons I can see on the desktop are 'My Docs' and 'My Computer' as they are on the top row.

The problems started a week or so ago when my burning software wouldn't recognise my cd drives. I changed cables, updated the software and drivers, altered the DMA setting, eventually I flashed the bios. After a few days it was working fairly well. The drives were recognised and I burned a few cds successfully.

This graphics problem came out of the blue. Last time I used the PC it worked OK, now my monitor displays what looks like one corner of a giant desktop I'm wondering if my mobo is on it's last legs. Any ideas?

go to start> control panel> display and hit the settings tab. see if you need to turn up the resolution.

or to get to there. right click on the desktop, click propertise, and that will get you to the same menu

Thanks Groundzero, but I've tried that. Problem is that the screen is so over magnified, the only bit of the properties box that I can see is the very top. I can see the top tabs, but none of the rest of it. I can jump between the tabs using the 'tab' key, but the mouse seems pretty useless. It seems to be 'clicking' on some point below that which I can see.

I've tried plugging the monitor into the onboard graphics, but that stops the PC from starting up completely. Though I'm not sure it would work that way with another graphic card attached to it.

Plus I can't actually remember the positions of the various buttons so that I could use, say, the tab and direction keys to change the resolution.

I've seen some probs before, but this is a new one on me!

It might do, thanks. I'll give it a go. I'm not too hot with a PC without a mouse

Could the "magnifier" be turned on in accessability?
(I think you would notice its control on the desktop if that were the case)

No, I don't think so. I didn't select that as one of the options when I installed windows ME.
