New to Linux
Well I have decided to install Linux (Mandrake) on my media box PC (I should have long ago), now I want from you a list of recomended apps I should install. I want to use this box for watching media files, DVD's, listening to MP3s etc I have a 5.1 Genius soundcard in it so I'll be wanting 5.1 sound also. Anyhitng else you think might be useful let me know.

READ NTFS yes........ write to it.... not yet. Fat 32 ...... read and write.
Mandrake's XMMS will actually play almost all of your media....... for DVD's Mplayer.

along with mplayer you will need libdvdcss in order to play encrypted DVDs -you may still find it in rpm package over at www.rpmfind.net |

I have a ATI radeon 7500 but the drivers only start at 8500 so I guess I can use this driver, I imagine all the catalysts for linus are the same but it asks me what version of XFree86 im using which I have no idea, there is a check.sh I can run in the command line to find out but I dont know how to do this - it asks me what program to open it with but I see no command line
Linux seems very confusing
