Home Networking help
Okay, I have a REALLY old 400mhz comp with 98 SE on it. My rig is has xp. I already plugged the old computer into my via a crossover cable. I just xp (so simple) to share my DSL connection over the OLD COMP connection. The old computer can browse the internet fine.
Now, I need to get some data from the old computer onto mine. Step-by-step: How do I setup BOTH windows up so that I can transfer files?
This is one area I have to clue what to do.
EDIT: Oh yea, a link to a web-site explaining would be perfect too.
thanks

I think the xp machine is almost ready to go already.
On the 98se machine....
right click "network neighborhood"....click "identification"...change the workgroup name to "mshome" (which should be the same as the xp machine)
I guess you have to reboot at this point.
On the 98se machine again right click "network neighborhood"...clcik "file and printer sharing"...check the box for "I want to share files blah blah".
Then it may want you to reboot AGAIN, lol.
Then when you right click on the folders with stuff in them on the 98se machine you will see a new word "sharing"...so you click on it and choose "shared as"..and give it a name etc.
Then maybe reboot AGIAN...and then go to the xp machine and look in "my network places" and you will see the folders you shared.....sometimes it takes up to maybe 15 minutes for the xp machine to show the folders etc.

Would be better in the Networking forum, Joker. Ask a mod to move it for ya.
Best advice I can give is to browse Helmig's site for nice, easy howto's.
If you get stuck following his steps, post back here and see if someone can help.
Cheers
Mick

yeah it will ask for the disk anytime you mess with the network properties etc.
An ME disk MIGHT work, lol.
Sometimes there is a folder called "options/cabs" that has some of the files in it.
You could always just take the disk out of the w98 machine and put it in the xp machine..put it in on the secondary ide channel maybe.
Then just drag and drop stuff.

You have to install networking stuff in win98, from the CD, or from the setup files if they are loaded on the hard drive. No other way to do it that I know of.

I tried the same thing, I was told by my local techs that it cant be done ntfs to fat 32. Both OS have to be either fat 32 or ntfs.

Ahhh, but you can convert your HDD to NTFS under Win98SE....I've got the file to do it on the wifes computer ( yet to use it though )...

Once you convert to NTFS, DOS won't recognize the drive!!!
Hence, a W98 startup disk work see the drive.

They have utilities for that also..for seeing ntfs files from a dos bootdisk etc.
And another point to remember is that once you go to ntfs, you CANT convert back tofat..its a one way street.
