cant install gaim

Man im really having problems today!!!

ok so mandrake 9.1 comes with gaim 0.59. I want to run something higher then that. It keeps giving me all kinds of errors but the most common one is this:

** (gaim:20497): WARNING **: Cannot open font file for font Luxi Sans 10
Gaim has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file.
This is a bug in the software and has happened through
no fault of your own.

But it does that for version 0.68, 0.67, 0.66, and 0.65. So I am assuming that I am missing that font or something. Anyone know how to fix it? BTW, 0.59 works fine but Id like to have some of the features that the newer versions offer.

There are some Mandrake-specific rpms for download. Not to sound stupid but have you tried them?

Another dumb question:

Do you have that font (Luxi Sans) installed? It's a pretty standard font for GTK2 apps. I could see where GAIM would barf if it couldn't find it.

Another dumb question - what version of Gnome do you have?

GAIM .59 was built on the older GTK libs. The newer versions of GAIM (like the ones you're installing) depend heavily on the GTK 2 libs.

Not sure if I'm helping any - its just these are the only things sticking out at me ATM.

I'm sure there's a way to do it from the command line but I don't know how.

If you're using Gnome as your desktop just click on the "Start Here" icon on the desktop - hit "preferences" - then "look and feel" then "fonts". You should see your choice of fonts in there.

Can't say how you'd do it in KDE other than to say you'll have to look in the Control Panel somewhere.

That should list your font choices though.

hmmm i do have that font.. as a matter of fact it was set to be the one for all the windowss and title bars. So to test things out I changed it to "terminal" font. Now gaim says that it "Cannot open font file for font Terminal 10" This is weird

Hey e98,

I am getting the exact same error message but with a different application. I'm trying to use a tool to access the TV-out port on my 3dfx Voodoo3. When I run the program, I spits that message out. I checked to see if I have the font installed using Scotts method, and I do.

I use Mandrake 9.1.
I'm trying to run a program called 3dfx_tvtool.

Weirdness

Let me know if you find anything out.

BTW, I use Gaim0.71 and I have no problems.

Well since we are both using mandrake 9.1 I would say is some bug in there somewhere. Fortunately, I was only using that instalation for "testing" and am happy with my slackware 9.1. I have found that on that computer that mandrake and redhat (any version) work fine at first but then all of the sudden start having weird random problems that escalate untill the system is unusable. But in my case, slackware has been working fine for over a month with no problems (knock on wood). So maybe just a change in distro is all you need? Im not really sure.
