New Network

I am building 5 computers for a small business. They currently have several Win98 machines networked together using a hub and all share a Lanier 5635 (Huge beast of a machine- copier, fax, printer, stapler etc...). I have two of the new boxes put together and have them networked together (WinXP Home). The problem is getting the printer to be recognized. I have tried the CD the printer came with, tried letting Windows look for a printer automatically.... etc can someone tell me step by step the process for getting a printer installed through: computer-LAN-Router-LAN-printer. After that I think I can get the rest of the machines to share.

Is this a peer-to-peer network? Is the Printer hooked to one of the peer machines or does it have a network connection?

What would distinguish it as a peer to peer?

Everything, including the printer, is plugged into a Netgear 10base-t ethernet hub via Cat5.

To be more specific, the printer is not hooked directly to any one computer.

When you run the add printer wizard, and you select network printer install, browse and see if it finds the printer. If it doesn't, and it's a printer connected directly to the network, then you need to set up the configuration on the printer properly so it's on the network. Make sure it's on the same subnet as the PC's.

Cheers

Peer-to-peer means no server acting as a domain. All PC's are equal.

Cheers

Browse doesn't find the printer, and it is connected directly to the network.

The printer is currently on the network serving the Win98 machines (same hub). No server here, so it would be peer to peer.

"then you need to set up the configuration on the printer properly so it's on the network. Make sure it's on the same subnet as the PC's."

How?

One more question: are the win98 PC's still attached, and do they see the printer? If so, you should be able to get the config from them. All you need is the address the pinter is at (either IP address or //printershare/ address.

If you go to Network neighbourhood and select search for all workgroup computers, printer should be listed if it's on the same subnet/ workgroup.

Cheers
Michael

edit: The printer should have a config interface somehow. Might be via software on a PC, might be via browser. Check the manual.

You need to get into the printers setup routine to make changes to it's network settings. Do you have a manual for the Lanier because it varies from printer to printer (even on those from the same manufacturer).

Should be able to browse to the IP address directly I think.

Try putting the IP address in a run command (\\IPaddress) and see if it starts the connect printer wizard.

Cheers
Mick

edit:.. or you could browse to \\servername\printername and get the same thing.

If browse doesn't work, enter \\servername\printername in the add printer wizard for network location.
