Segmentation Faults???

Hi all,

Everything was running great! Then I try to run xawtv (a tv program for a tv tunner card in linux) and it just keeps saying segmentation fault. So im like ok....ill just install another program. I cant compile one because my libpthread file is messed up or something. So I go ahead an try to install an rpm for tvtime (another tv program for linux). Guess what? rpm also gives me a segmentation fault. I have tried restarting the comp a few times but I have no idea whats going on and that is not fixing it. Can someone please help me? Im running redhat 8.

Sounds vaugely familliar, I remember having some difficulty with RH7.3 and xawtv -I had to tweak something in XF86Config, something to do with the color depth and screen sizes I believe ...sorry I don't remember clearly, that was a long time ago in Linux/computer years, can't even remember if it was segfaults that was the error I was getting.

Are you starting the program in an xterm? Is there more to the error message?

nah it just said segmentation fault. It did that also when trying to use the rpm command. I then erased the hard drive and put mandrake 9.1 on but I was forced to use an old version of gaim and could not compile or install a newer one. Then I erased the hard drive again and installed redhat 7.3. Everything seems to work fine except for thunderbird (mail client from mozilla) . I used to get things to work pretty well but its been a while since I have used linux on my desktop. Dont quite know what to do for now.

I remember now that in RH7.3 I had to change the color mode to 16bit because the 24bit I had by default would not work with xawtv and the Nvidia drivers

hmm thats weird. Now im actually using a program that I like way better then xawtv. Its called tvtime and you can put it into full screen. That way you dont have to watch a small box with lots of black around it in full screen mode in xawtv.

Try changing your Capture setting in XawTV. From GrabDisply to Overlay or vice-versa.

You will find that this solves your problem.
