Reverse Lookup

Hello Everybody

I have installed a Win2k Advanced server in my network and have configured DNS server on it. I have configured one zone in Forward Lookup Zone, which quite understandable. But what is Reverse Lookup Zone? why one should need to configure it in a network? what are the benefits of using Reverse Lookup zone?

Regards
Peeyush

do a ping -a on an IP
If you don't have reverse lookup, it won't resolve

syntax
ping -a 192.168.1.105

sometimes you don't want it to resolve, so you leave that blank

IIRC not having reverse will break certain things in AD, at the minimum you should have an entry for your DNS server.

Also if you plan on running a mail server many admins will reject mail from servers that do not have a reverse lookup!

How exactly are you supposed to setup a reverse DNS? As you know mntsnow...I'm running 2k3 Server and Exchange 2k3. I think that is why RR doesn't allow me to send messages to any of the users.

No, RR has any dynamic IPs (say that home users) blacklisted. You need to use a SMTP smart host.

You should get a bounce message with the info.

I've seen the smart host in the options before but, are you saying that I have to type in my ISP's smtp server so that it routes things through that or what?

I don't think this is entirely true (all dynamic IPs blacklisted) because I am on RR and have had my own email server for a long time without any problems with email going in or out. I do understand AOL has blacklisted email servers in certain IP ranges on RR's networks though.

It may depend on what RR network you are on. I have seen it both ways as well.

And, you can try your ISPs SMTP server as a smart host. Can't hurt.

Well, my server is on the RR network. It's not that they block all outgoing mail...it's just that they block all outgoing mail to users on the rr network. I think AOL blocks my mail, too.

When I try to send mail to users of AOL I get this message:

Your message

To: XXXXX@aol.com
Subject: XXXXXXXXX
Sent: Sat, 20 Sep 2003 01:28:00 -0400

did not reach the following recipient(s):

XXXXX@aol.com on Sun, 21 Sep 2003 18:27:51 -0400
A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients.
Contact your administrator.
<XXXXXXXXX.com #5.3.5>

Then when I try to send a message to somebody on the rr network I get a message back saying this:

Your message

To: XXXXX@nc.rr.com
Subject:
Sent: Sun, 21 Sep 2003 18:24:17 -0400

did not reach the following recipient(s):

XXXXX@nc.rr.com on Sun, 21 Sep 2003 18:24:26 -0400
The message cannot be delivered due to a configuration error on the server. Please contact your Administrator.
<mydomain.com #5.3.0 smtp;553 5.3.0 Mail from
66.57.XXX.XX rejected, see http://www.mail-abuse.org/dul>

And for the smart host what would you primarily put in? Like my stmp server primarily or what? Right now I have it set so it's using my DNS which is hosted by me.
