Kids Photoshop: Clone Stamp/Healing Brush help!

Hello everyone! (OuT, you better be paying attention!)

Ok, I've been trying to better my PS skillz, especially when it comes to touching up photos. A lot of times I find myself wanting to remove items from a photo without leaving any trace that they were ever there...I like clean work! However, I find myself frustrated when I try to figure out when to use the Clone Stamp and when to use the Healing Brush.

For example, in this picture I was trying to remove the wooden frame just to practice...however, I can't seem to cleanly remove it. With the clone stamp, it removes it all the way, but the lighting on the wall from the sampled area I cloned from is different than the lighting on the wall surrounding the wooden frame.
RESULT: obvious touchup work, the "missing piece" is easily seen by the light spot where the frame used to be.
When I use the healing brush, even at different hardness/spacing settings it just looks like I used the dang smudge tool.

Check it out:

See what I mean? This is probably easier than I think, but I want it to look clean...I won't settle for less.

So, would somebody show me the path the enlightenment here?

Thanks!
Mike

Any time, davidamarkley! Trust me, if you see any threads in the graphics forum with my name attached, I'm probably asking a question. I'm always learning from OuT...

Thanks yet again, OuT...works like a champ! I just need to get myself in the mindset of a PS Pro. Darn it's tough though...
