AMD XP 2500+ OVERHEAT PROB!

hey guys,

I need some help. I have an AMD XP 2500+ Barton CPU running ar 333FSB I made a custom cooling mod out of a coolermaster $10.00 heatsinch/fan combo. Used longer screws then I should have ti tighten down the heatplate that sits on the cpu. As far as I know they didnt hit the cpu. But I did forget to add some thermal compund between the heatplate and the heatsinch. It overheated-and shut down. I then proceeded to use the correct screws and add the thermal compund. I was using Artic Silver 3 the cpu temp ranmges anywhere from 118.4F-131F put the heat rises from 118.4F-131F very quickly. I changed and used a silicone compund and a thermal take volcano heatsinck and a 80MM fan thats 39 CFM and 3k RPM on the heatsink. It still runs at the same temp I do have the 4-pin and 20-pin connectors on the board. I am running a 400W Radimax powersply **(dont know if its true). I have a audigy soundcard dlink NIC, 40GB HD, DVDROM drive, IDE DOntrollercard(PCI), CDRW, And an ATN35 Shuttleboard (Nforce Chipset)**(blue)**. I dont know what the problem is, this all started when the mod was put on. Did I damage the CPU, or the PSU? Thank-You To antone who helps me out, or at least reads and attemps to.

-Louis
(Thnx)

P.S. I'm using windows 2k but I dont think this pretains to this problem.

Ok you need to put the AS3 back on. Silicone compounds are very bad. AS3 would be your best bet on cooling. My 2000xp was running at 140F idle and I got some AS3 and a volcano 11+ and my temp dropped to 115F. Like 20C I believe so put the arctic silver back on..also what hsf r u running??

And the silicone and the AS3 seem to be very simular in temp.

Thanks
-Any new suggestions would help to..

Are you absolutely certain that the heatsink is flat and level on the cpu?. Heat sinks (usually) can be installed lopsided, leaving a crack on one side between the cpu core and the heatsink. Since you have modded your heatsink, I cannot visualize exactly what you have..but I think if you take it off, clean up the old thermal goo...put a small amount of AS3 on the core...attach the heatsink..then..take it off again and look at the bottom. If it is touching the cpu core all over, there will be Artic Silver on the base of the heatsink where it came in contact with the cpu core. Retry this until you get the AS in an even pattern on the base of the heatsink.

Will a PSU ever damage? I thought only the CPU can. You might as well get yourself a new fan or you could also get some more added fan plugged on your motherboard That may take an extra juice and it would also help to coolent your hardware.

also as3 takes a few days of running to get the "full effect" . so your temp will get lower after a few days useing as3
