Can Linux do what Windows can?
I was just wondering, can you download stuff like AIM, MSN Messanger, IRC scripts, etc, and use it without problems with a Linux distro?

Most of that is PRE-installed when I install Mandrake....... or SuSe. But programs are compiled for the Linux OS....... so no you can't download AIM for Windows and expect it to work.
At least not without installing wine or some other 3rd party software.

Well there are plenty of programs for linux that are "equivilent" to the windows counterparts. GAIM is a great multi protocol IM client that does all of the protocols you listed.

anything you can do in windows can somehow be done in Linux.. sometimes easier sometimes not.
I will tell you tho linux does have a decent learning curve to it, but once you start to get a feel for the OS's things really start to be learned alot faster.
good thing about learning linux is that it's real easy to pick up solaris/unix/hp-ux/aix after learning linux..

Why would you use gaim and gnome icu and yahoo messenger? Gaim connects to all of them and works great.

i thought of a great analogy of linux/windows:
linux is like a manual transmission while windows is an automatic. for the everyday lazy people who dont car about what they drive, it is perfectly fine for the car to shift for them (maybe not always the most effecient however); aka windows. Linux on the other hand needs a clutch (3rd party programs) to act like an automatic, and it also requires more work. in return though, you usually get better preformance (less of windows stuff eating up the insides of your computer).
just crossed my mind and wanted to share that with everyone

Well, not necessarially.
Linux doesnt need a clutch to act like an automatic. Many native linux programs work flawlessly and easily, requiring zero 3rd party software.
The only time you would need 3rd party software would be to emulate an environment or run foreign apis, ie programs not compiled for linux.
