Connecting laptop to tv

Hi-
I am trying to connect my relatively old inspiron 5000e to my panasonic tv/vcr combination. I have dells composite tv-out adapter cable, but I don't realy know what to do from there. Can anyone help me?

is it an ATI video card?

you need to have the ATI control panel installed, to see if you do, just right click on your desktop, left click on properties, click on the settings tab, click advanced, and click on the display tab. if you dont have one, you dont have it. you need to get it from www.ati.com if you do, just activate the tv display.
