stir fried router

well it goes something like this........
dsl connection is flipping on and off in one of its connectivity spasams and then it doesn't reconnect.........too much time on the phone with mindspring so that i could dial my modem their way finally got me a check of my line and its fine so i hooked my modem to a machine and dialed (made harder by the fact that xp seems to require a location to set up a pppoe connection and they told me to ignore the location wizard........) . so basically the modem and line are in working worder but my router (dlink di-704) wont dial it. ive tried hard reset of the router but no dice so what does everyone suggest?

I have had a very bad experience with the d-link di-704p. It would all of a sudden lose connection to the internet and I would have to go reset it. It did this about 4 times a day....So I went out and I bought another router..a Belkin. I haven't had any problems out of it at all so I say that it is that router. I will never buy a d-link router again.

So my suggestion is if you just bought that router to take it back and get another one manufactured by somebody else.

have you tried your computer hooked up directly to the their cable modem without the firewall in place?

(and these devices aren't routers they are firewall NAT switches).

thats true they are nats but ya know router kinda roles off your tounge nice so thats what we all call them (a little royal we there) and to the heart of the issue

a) i know, i know, its crap
b) 3 years, dont think comp-usa is gonna take it back
c) i guess i could try firmware update but i didnt see that would rese anything more than the hard reset did and since the hard resest was quicker i did that
and d) yes by hooked it to a machine and dialed i mean i connected the dsl modem to my computer and used a software pppoe dialer

on a random not ethey dont really dial eaither
