Kids Newbie XP messenger question

I finally gave in and installed XP Home on my new PC. It seemed all my friends complained about spam coming through "Messenger". So one of the first things I did was go to the control panel...

Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services

I highlighted "Messenger", right clicked and selected properties, then disabled the program. However, every time I boot up I get that stupid Messenger icon with the red x telling me I'm "Not Signed In".

[Messenger is listed in Services as disabled]

Is there something I'm missing here?

Thanks everyone.

The Messenger service and Windows Messenger are two completely different things. The Messenger service works with the netsend command to let two or more computers on the same network message each other. I can also be used for alerts and such.

Windows Messenger Microsoft's variation of what an Instant Messenging client should be. Two completely different things.

Kids Enlighten Me Scott!

There must be a way to avoid the miserable pop-ups that are plaguing people. Has anyone got a link or explanation to how I can avoid the messenger spam?

If you're having trouble with Windows Messenger (the IM Program) then just start up the program, then go to Tools - Options -and then uncheck the box that says "start program when when windows starts" or something to that effect.

I do recommend you get Adaware 6 (it's free) from http://www.lavasoft.de/

Let me know if you're still having problems.

Thank you Scott

I found this after a Google search:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302089

It confirms your suggestion as well as unchecking a similar box in Outlook Express. I've done both, but every time I check e-mail that icon shows up in the tray. (I did a reboot after unchecking those boxes).

I'm now fooling with the "Set Program Access and Defaults" thingy

Duh...the icon says I'm NOT signed in. As long as I don't get signed in automatically, I'm good to go.

It's gonna be a LONG weekend...

why not just uninstall it?

start > run > then type: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

that should remove, if not tell me

This might be easier. Just be sure to click on then English flag once you reach the site (unless you speak German).

It gives you the option to uninstall Messenger. Highly recommended utility.
