Changing out processor

Maybe a dumb question, but when you change out a processor, do you have to take the motherboard out of case?

The reason I ask is that I remember putting a lot of pressure on the hold down clamp. Since the motherboard is suspended about 0.5 inch above the bottom of the case, will the motherboard crack if I put that amount of pressure on it?

I put the original processor in on the motherboard while it was out of the case when I was building the machine.

Thank you for the help!

It would probably be worth the effort to do so. You need to insure the HSF is nice and flat, making good contact, etc. Most sockets do not have enough clearance to do a good install, especially with a "clip" mounted HSF.

I usually need a second set of hands to do it with the mobo laying flat on a table!

I never take my motherboard out for processor upgrades... Never cracked one before... Just make sure you have the motherboard mounts in all the mount holes so the board won't flex so much adding support to bottom of the motherboard.
