Can't Install OSes on ASRock K7VM2
Simply put,I cannot install any operating system on my new ASRock motherboard. Yes,that's right. Here's the story:
Specs:
ASock K7VM2
Processor: Athlon Thunderbird 1.33 ghz
RAM: 384 MB of PC133
HD: Samsung ATA-100 7200 RPM, 40 gig
Audio/Video/Lan: Onboard
I FDISK the hard drive I had in my previous machine, okay,no problem. I made one single Primary DOS partition. So, I boot up the system with my Windows XP Professional Corporate disk (burnt,I might add,if that really makes a difference). And it goes through the typical process. I let it format the hard drive as NTFS (non-quick,I might add). Okay, then it begins to go through the process of 'building list of files to be copied'. Now here's the kicker:
as soon as it begins to copy the Windows setup files I get something like this:
"The file 'xxx.xx' was not copied correctly.
The file Setup placed on your hard disk is not a valid Windows
XP system image. If you are installing from a CD, there may be a problem with the Windows XP CD.
*To Retry, press enter.
*To skip this file, press ESC.
CAUTION: If you skip this file, Setup may not complete and Windows may not function properly.
*To quit Setup, press F3."
xxx= any number of files, usually shell32.dll,comctl32.dll, and many others. Each time it is the same set of files, not random ones.
First of all, I know for a fact that the disk is fine. I had just recently used it to install XP Pro on my gaming machine days befores, so it is not the CD. I even went as far as to go and get my buddie's official Windows XP Home CD; same problem.
I tried installing Windows 2000 Pro (burnt), exacty same error messages.
Here's the kicker. I tried installing ME (retail) and 98 SE (burnt) and they actually go into the setup process. However, near the end when things where 'being added to the start menu' and 'hardware was being finalized' I would get tons of blue screens of death and even the occasional white box of death.
I thought it was kind of odd how the Windows NT based OSes had the same error messages and the Windows 9x based OSes also had the same set of setup problems (but were different from the NT-based ones).
In any case, I could not successfully install an OS to my hard drive.
I even went as far as to try this on another hard drive, swap CD-ROM drives, change IDE cables, and format the HD on my good machine. No luck.
The only thing I can think of is that my motherboard is somehow screwed. Perhaps the fact that the this motherboard supports up to ATA-133 and my hard drive I believe is ATA 100 might be a factor?
Any and all insight and help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
