network two computers

Hi
I am getting a new PC very shortly and I want to be able to enable my old machine to share my broadband connection,
The main PC is a 2.6Ghz P4 with a standard ethernet card and 8 usb slots. running winxp
the other is a 500Mhz amd running win98
I am not interested in sharing printers/files etc all I want to do is allow both machines to share the broadband modem.
Is this done by a simple cross-over cable (after I have both machines configured)
I want to connect my modem to the USB port if possible
thanks
Roger...UK

Well if you're going to use USB (which I woudlnt recommend, but itll work I guess), then you'd prolly just want a crossover cable between the two computers and use Windows ICS.

However, the preferred method is just to get a router. They're only 50-60 dollars now for a good home-use router.

if internet sharing is your goal then go with a linksys cable router. you can get a one port or even a 4 port (non wireless) real cheap. setting it up is pretty much idiotproof. they work great too.

Ive been using a linksys four port router for a couple years now and would totally go with that, thats the best option..especially if sometime down the road you want to add another computer. Might as well buy the best equipment now

Here's another option that is really cheap until 9/30.

Dlink DI-614+ AirPlus wireless access point with built in 4 port wired router. You can disable the wireless for now, and when you get a laptop in the future, you can activate it and use the wireless connection on the lappy

$39 + $5 shipping after mail in rebate from NewEgg
