Partitioning a Hard Drive

Hey Guys I'm getting a 80 gig hardrive, and I want to make 3 partitions on it, one that contains windows xp, the other one the applications, games, documents, and the other i want to leave it for junk stuff, on my old drive I will install Mandrale Linux 9.2 when the new release is available.

What will be safe size for winxp?

I have already decided the 3 partition size will be around 10 gig.

Whats the command line to partition a HD in windows XP or can I make all this with just the bootable cd install disk for WinXP?

Why not decide on your Xp Partition size, install Xp then partition the empty space from within XP using disk manager?

make a windows 98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com) on a floppy. boot to your floppy drive and use the command 'fdisk'
in there you can partition, etc.
or you could find a copy of Partition Magic which is a lot more user friendly.

I agree w/ HfdWolfPack to an extent. If you do it his way, then your CD-ROM(s) will be the next drive letters after your XP partition. You can easily change them w/ Disk Management, but you'd have to go into the Registry to change the default install location for XP.

I would create the partitions w/ a bootdisk, you can format in the setup.

And on a side note, I would not use more than 6GB's for your XP partition. Since you're going to have another partition w/ all your apps on it, you won't even get close to using up 6GB's, let alone 10GB's. That's just a waste and you will probably want to put that somewhere else.

If it were me, I'd go like . . .

6GB = XP partition
10GB = APPS partition (if you game, you might wanna consider going bigger w/ this one)
??GB = DATA partition (this will depend on what you have left over from your APPS partition)

I know how to use fdisk the small problem i dont have a floppy disk now i know they are cheap but its going to be used only for that...... so i was wondering if all could be done with the bootable install of winxp..

What ideas do you guys have for a 120gb hd? I'm building a new system.
I was thinking maybe 20gb for windows, 30 for redhat, 20gb for backup of windows, 20gb for apps (program files on this old comp is 11gb so maybe more), 30gb for files and downloads.
So you could just use this 98 boot disk to make partitions then format them however later on? Like how would you format all but the one for redhat in ntfs? Hmm maybe i will get partitionmagic check out this http://www.dealdealdeal.com/100370.html
$26.45 shipped
