how to apply thermal compound

I've always used AS3, but sometimes I wonder if I'm doing everything exactly right. (and yes i've read the as3 website)

At one website (maybe AS) I read that you're supposed to put the compound not only on the core, but also rub it in the heatsink. Other places do not say this at all! I'll be getting my SLK900 soon, and I don't want to make a mistake. If anyone could clear this up for me I would be very appreciative!

Misc how to apply thermal compound

I usually put it on both....just make sure you line it up..do this by putting a dab on the core and set the heatsink very carefully and lined up correctly on there and lift it up. take the compound you desire and put it on ur heatsink generously b/c it doesnt matter if it is of a little (actually its better to have some extra) and that should do it.

You need very little of the compound so I would say just put it on the cpu. I would think that by putting it on both the cpu and the heatsink, there's a lot greater chance of using too much...which is a bad thing.

From the AS website;

"Tint the bottom of the heatsink in the area where the CPU core will contact it. Put a finger into a plastic bag and thoroughly rub the compound into the base of the heatsink using both clockwise and counter-clockwise circular motion. This will ensure optimum filling of the microscopic valleys in the metal.
DO NOT use your bare finger to apply or smooth the compound (skin cells, and oils again)

Re-clean the heatsink surface with a LINT FREE cloth. Do not use any solvent or fluid. You may notice that the base of the heatsink is slightly discolored even after all the compound would seem to have been removed. That is the Arctic Silver thermal compound filling the microscopic valleys."

should't you be using quotes since you stole that from the AS website?

Apply paste to both the core and the base of the HS as per the instructions at the Arctic Silver website... those other sites are wrong.

To quote from the AS site: "This will ensure optimum filling of the microscopic valleys in the metal."

My apologies with due respect to AS. Yes, it is straight from their site that I posted earlier. I was just pointing out his original question was answered in the link that he already read.

My mistake. I hope the RIAA isn't suing for plagerism.
