compaq presario 5724 replacing bad hard drive

hello... I had a Q re: a presario 5724 with a hard drives thats apparently going bad... Ive been told and seen myself that putting a different hard drive in these things makes the "quickrestore" cds useless... or at least as far as ive seen...
now Ive tried to install win 98 by itself but end up getting mobo resource probs and shutdowns that never complete... I was wondering if there was any kinda workaround I could do, either install 98 alone and make it work, or preferably make the quickrestore work on the newer HD... because I dont think paying 300$ for a replica HD from compaqs within the realm of sanity... lol

The software that either comes with the new drive or can be downloaded from the drive mfr. will make changing drives a snap. Just get it and follow the directions.
