Latex / Waterproofing

Recently got into Geocaching which is like a modern day scavenger hunt using GPS. I've been using an Ipaq 5555 and Socket Bluetooth GPS. My Socket Bluetooth GPS would be the perfect unit if it were waterproof.

Looking for suggestions on brushable latex. Doing a search of the net, most of the products seem to be geared towards casting molds. I'm looking for a product with low viscosity (so it doesn't go places where it shouldn't) and that produces a thin but waterproof layer. Any suggestions on brands/products is appreciated.

You could simply use it inside of a clear plastic ziplock bag. Then you will not have any problems changing batteries, or gumming up buttons.

Thanks for the reply. I did consider that initially. My problem with that is that the GPS unit is attached to a lanyard which hangs from my bag. The eyelet for the lanyard is on the corner, so I would be able to waterproof everything around it. If I used the baggie, I wouldn't be able to close it completely or would have to make a small hole for the lanyard...increasing the chance of moisture.

You could run the cord out through a hole and then seal it with silicon caulk!

Maybe some has a better idea.

Thanks for the link kingofpain!! A co-worker of mine mentioned that too me earlier today and it sounds like a possibility. I would have to mess around with it because if it's too thick, I'm afraid it will degrade the GPS signal. Just at a glance, that link looks like they might have something to do the trick.

Well, I ended up ordering an Otter Box from Mobile Planet that is made specifically for some of the BlueTooth GPS models out there. It Looks like it'll work with Socket, Emtac, and the Co-pilot model. I believe Teletype has a model they just released, but the form factor is slightly different.

I did find something called 'Household Goop' at a local Home Depot that I was considering using. It is a latex based sealent that dries to a rubbery consistency, so it's not permanent. I was about to start to use it but found the otter box and decided to go that route instead.
