I'm not disagreeing, but you can turn to the terminal to spare the wallet by using apt
as Lindows is based on debian - example:
apt-get install openoffice.org
should work

Sadly not. In Lindows everything runs as root. Bad idea from the start. They've created a Linux distro that actually requires virus scanners etc, which isn't a good thing.
The layout of Lindows is going to be very different to that of debian, so while you probably could install some of the stuff from debians sources, most of it wouldn't work right.
Lindows in general is a bad idea unless you're really limited with what you want to do with your computer, such as surf the web or send email. Its just a bad go-between that is neither windows, nor Linux and is pretty incompatible with both. I've never heard anything positive about it, and one of my friends installed it and it was useless.
Go with Mandrake. That will get you started and has lots of GUI tools to help you.

No command line stuff if possible.

You will sooner or later need to use the command line. Once you get used to working like that again (or if you're like me and prefered that all along) then you'll be perfectly happy with it. It normally provides a quicker and simpler way of doing things, so no need to be scared.
