Radeon 9200 vs. 9000 Pro

This isn't a matter of opinion.

The 9000 Pro has a faster core and memory speed. And they're based on the same chip with the same features. That is not my opinion. That is the way it is.

The 9200 by ATI overcocks fairly well.

Athlon XP 2800+ Barton core.
Radeon 9200 128 non including 3D Mark 01 image tests got a 7800 Score when overclocked, however when checked to perform additional image quality tests, it scored only 7200.

On a Pentium 486
Radeon 9000 Pro 128 scored a 7800 in 3dmark01 no checked to perform image quality tests, but when image quality tests were checked, the card scored 8011.

Why not pick up a more powerful 9100 for about the same price?

I skip MHz ratings because they mean little due to variances in pipeline designs for different architecures.

Anyway, I am still pushing the 9100 as the best entry-level card currently available from ATI. The fill-rate is superb, even if it is an older design.

I just picked up a 9600 Pro this morning. I honestly would have bought 9100 instead, but I couldn't find a local supplier, and I needed it today.

9600 Pro is better for gaming.

I am not gamer. I need raw fill-rate and bandwidth, not aspects like pixel shaders and anistropic filtering. In my case, the 9100 would have likely performed within a few percent of the 9600, for nearly $100 less.

I have plenty of ATI cards sitting on shelves collecting dust, as the ATI OpenGL implementation leaves much to be desired. I am hoping the latest Catalyst drivers have addressed a few of the past problems, as I was hesitant to buy the 9600 in the first place.
