yeah, certainly makes for bad business, lowballing is looked at with hooded eyes in most cases.
Thing is, that most people [new pc parts traders] don't understand economics, supply and demand, and just plain common sense.
Newegg and other companies alike are able to sell components for such low prices because they move massive quantities as well as having several in stock.
A local seller will be lucky to have 3 of a certain item in stock, which with limited supply yields a higher price. With less demand an even higher price is required to compensate even having such items in stock.
With more supply and more demand, a company/seller can move more product for less money and still make off with some good money.
Personally if i see something thats worth buying, ill pay for it regardless of price. If im looking to buy something cheap, i won't ask someone for a lower price except in rare cases, and which ill offer a trade plus money. If you're looking for a good deal, don't lowball a seller, just keep looking, maybe your opinion of "a good deal" is not fair.. it just takes time to learn between cheap and chinsy. edited for clarity

Just my $0.02. Ask the low(life) ballers for an offer of money or trade. Accept or reject the offer(politely) then tell them to take a leap at a rolling donut. (Did the money order arrive yet?)

I've never had a problem with someone asking for a lower price than what I'm selling it for. Thats part of the selling/trading way of life. What I do hate are as you said the people that say well this guy over here has it for less. To me there is nothing wrong with someone wanting to get a good deal { i know I always want good stuff cheap} so I'm always polite about it and say sorry I'm set on my prices or maybe you can make another offer.

I sell AND buy stuff online so I see both sides of it. I usually offer someone a few bucks lower than what they have posted...with the assumption that they have it listed at a few bucks above their minimum, lol.
And usually the same happens to me in return.
It woould be easier to sell and buy without the "song and dance" routine.
You know what I mean..you go to buy a car...dude has $6500 on the sticker..he KNOWS if push came to shove he would move it for 5500....so you tell him you like it but you were looking for something more around $5800ish...he says he doesnt have enough mark up in it to come down much maybe he can "ket it go" for $6300....back and forth each bs'ing the other, lol. To me its a drag.
Personally I hope to, when I get my comp biz going a little more, to try to avoid that by not setting myself up as the "bargain" guy in town...Id rather charge a little more in order to weed out the tightwad penny watchers, cuz they are the ones who are never satisfied anyway, lol.
But yeah, the total lowballers are a drag, you put up a price on an item and before its been up for 5 minutes someone is pm-ing you saying a friend just got one for wayyyyy less blah blah.
Sometimes when Ive sold comp stuff people have quoted a certain super low price to me, lol. I tell 'em if they can get it for that that they better jump on it and buy me 3 or 4 also, lol.

I agree.
It's different when you are in negotiations for a car. But when you buy/trade with people it is a whole other kettle fo fish.
Usually when I go to sell, I go to Newegg first and see what they are offering the item at, and I try to price accordingly. I also usually check eBay to see what the going rate is too. Because I hate when I put something up and people offer essentially wampum. And this is after I've tried price accordingly to boot.
Most of the stuff, I want to sell right now, is more valuable to me than to someone else.
The best time I have had have usually been trades, when both parties know the rough value of the items.

Well, other than a few things I've seen for sale in the traders forum, everything I've seen has been reasonably priced, especially you guys that will eat the shipping costs on most stuff ( short of Monitors, etc ). To me, that's a helluva deal right there. A person has to realize that they are buying ( for the most part ) used equipment that is shipping in KNOWN good working condition...that's another plus. Sure NewEgg has a great RMA process, but you pay for return shipping, and you aren't guarenteed the replacement is going to work either. 99% of the time, anything bought here has already been run in a machine ( or as a machine ) so chances of DOA are nominal.

haggling is one thing . but down right lowballing is just a drag . one pm is one thing but when they start to "pester " thats what gets me . i do the research before i post something . i check PW , and newegg and ebay to see whats it going for if it is NIB . and then set my price . what gets me is when you post an item NIB for lets say 90$ . it is lets say 10% lower than anywhere else . and the lowballer pesters ya for it for 60$ . thats what i am talking about . regular haggling i can deal with . it people that do that is was gets my goat ./
