CPU Settings???

I just built a new machine:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe
AMD 2500+ 512K/L2 Cache
512KB DDR 400
80GB Maxtor S-ATA HDD

My question is, when I look at the speed that windows is reporting, it says 1.09GHz. Could this be right?

I checked in the bios, its reporting that the:

CPU External Freq = 100Mhz
CPU Freq. Multiple Setting [Auto] (goes to 11.0x)
System Performance = Optimal
Memory Frequency = Auto

I tried increasing the CPU External Frequency to 166Mhz but windows locked up in about 15 seconds so i changed it back.

Are these settings right? Does anyone have a similar set up to this and can tell me what the settings should be.

Any help would be appreciated.

refer to this
for help. your FSB at 166 us correct.

what temp is your BIOS reporting when you set it to 166? that speed in windows should be 1833MHz or like 1.8 something......

uh oh, looks like we've got another locking up 2500+ on an A7N8X..

there's a couple of 'em around here somewhere. I have an idea this could be bios/voltage related.

What brand of Ram did you purchase? Are you positive its DDR400?

Just changed the settings to 166Mhz, Auto (11.0x) and Auto (1.65V). Windows booted worked for a minute or so.....Hung up, then reverted to 640x480 16 colour and started working....

I've never seen this before....could this mean my video card is not happy with other hardware? Card = ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MBDDR

I'm confused

this doesn't provide accurate problem solving direction...

do you have the catalyst 3.7 drivers from ATI for your video card?

this is quite odd...

make sure you have all drivers updated for:

Motherboard
Video Card
Operating system updates

speaking of which, what Operating System are you using? XP? 2000?

I have the driver installed that came on the CD. Ver. 6.14.10.6360 according to Windows...

As for the OS: Windows XP SR1, complete with all the updates..

The only settings that seem to be stable are CPU External Freq = 100Mhz, Multiplier of 11.00.

Those are the settings that the OS was installed with. Would that have anything to do with it??

Just reading this thread and boom I'm having the same exact problem, I just built a new rig, Asus A7N8X Delux, AMD athalon XP 3000+barton, Corsair XMS DDR 1G, Sapphire Radeon 9800 pro

I've get the same readings as the guy who started this thread, I've tried to up my cpu speed and so for, but when the computer boots up it tells me my cpu speed is not right and it wants me to change it before windows will fire up,,, won't let me change the settings for cpu speed. Just finished this machine yesterday and running the drivers that came with the video card right now. So how does one change these settings in WinXP Pro??

Thanks All

The Barton is fairly new. A lot of boards still being shipped would still need a BIOS update to recognise one. My 1 Mo old ABIT nf7-s would run my Barton 2500 @ 100 mhz when set to auto.
After I updated the BIOS it worked fine.
