I got the comp in 99' or 00' just incase that has anything to do with the version of DOS that I have, but i dont know if that makes a difference,... thanks!

If you boot off of the WinXP disk you DONT have to reformat the drive ahead of time etc..or use any special commands because as part of the install you can tell it to format.

You boot from the cd....choose install..it will search yur drive and find your partition....you choose that partition..it gives a warning about another OS already being on that partition..you choose it anyway..then you choose to format that partition.

well incase you do want to know the command, even tho you dont really need it. all you do is type

"format c:"
C: being the partition

If you want to do a "quick" format, where it just formats the allocation tables and not the whole drive, then you just type "format c: /q /u"
