K7S5A USB ports
Need help solving this one. When I plug my HP printer or digital camera into the back USB ports on the K7S5A mobo, the device isn't recognized. But I have no problem when I plug them into the front ports.
I've removed all the ports from the device manager and they've reinstalled, but same problem exists.
I've got four USB ports that don't seem to work properly. Any way to correct this?
Thanks

That's a K7S5A pro, I presume. What operating system? The rear ports are on the VIA USB 2.0 controller; for these to work properly you need a recent operating system with all the latest service packs installed. Instructions at www.viaarena.com , driver section.

I've got all the latest drivers and SP1 downloaded and installed.
I checked the root hubs and VIA settings on the "device manager" and all appear to be working properly.

Problem solved!
Thanks to the techies at ECS, I now have my USB ports!
Seems they won't work if a PCI card is plugged into the first PCI slot in the board. Weird, but my soundcard's now in another slot previously occupied by a LAN card.
In addition to having usable USB ports, I'm now using the onboard LAN, and it seems my cable internet connection is SMOKING!!
By the way, I had a response from ECS within 48 hours of sending a tech support request. Talk about SMOKING!!
Thanks gang

yes the manual says if you want USB 2 support you must use the back usb ports and that you cannot use the back usb ports and PCI slot 1. Had the same problem, saw this in the book and swapped to another PCI slot and everything is working great. |

I was having USB problems myself, and found this forum by a google search. I have a unique problem in that I am using dual-head display with Windows2000Pro and 2 video cards, a PCI and an AGP. Dualhead wont work if the PCI videocard is in another slot, yet I need USB for my wireless network adapter. Any suggestions?

I have the K7S5A Pro, with Windows 2000 SP4, fully patched, etc. My MP3 player was being detected, but Windows refused to install it correctly -- bizarre errors, no amount of tinkering was helping. I swapped my old video card to PCI3 from PCI1, and now USB 2.0 is working fine in my 4 rear USB ports, as another poster mentioned the front 2 are not USB 2.0 but I don't care -- this is 4 more working ports than I had this morning! Yay!
Crazy.

Not crazy, a classic case of RTFM. The board's manual says in clear words that if you intend to use the USB 2.0 controller, then PCI1 slot must remain empty.

It does not state, however, what the behaviour of the ports will be if you do require the PCI1 slot.
And I wasn't saying that it's crazy and undocumented, I was saying that it's a poor implementation of the technology. I disagree that I should have to use only certain slots to enable certain other unrelated options. It makes me think that ECS is cutting corners elsewhere, if their board is engineered to be unuseable at full load.
